“Home of the Brave” by Betty Huang

Home of the Brave. A small phrase that packs a lot of punch. That’s what artist Betty Huang thought when’s he saw the sign posted outside the local hospital in Easton. It was the exact scene that begged to be captured in oil.

Owner of Studio B Art Gallery in downtown Easton, Betty has been busy painting in her upstairs studio during the pandemic. While the world slowed down due to COVID-19, artists were given the time to “reflect, explore and expand their knowledge of art,” Betty explained. She wanted to capture “the times” during the pandemic in a town that she loves.

While walking along Goldsborough Street to her studio and gallery, she saw a sculpture that she sees every day on her walk, except now it included masks. The painting’s title says it all, “These Are the Times.” Betty plans to do more paintings capturing the essence of the times during the pandemic.

Currently in Studio B Gallery, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, Betty is featuring an exhibit by internationally renowned artists represented by the gallery entitled “Around the World,” which features paintings from foreign travels. Travel has been thwarted during the pandemic for many, so Betty wanted to look for “bright things in these dark times” with paintings from around the world.

Betty has been involved in the arts community, including Plein Air Easton, and as President of the Working Artists Forum since 2013. She also serves on the board of Discover Easton as vice president. Discover Easton’s mission is to enhance and promote the culture an business community in Easton. It spearheaded Easton’s Arts & Entertainment District designation, for example.

Most days Betty is painting upstairs in her studio, which is located above the gallery. Ring the doorbell and Betty will open the studio. Studio B Gallery is located at 7B Goldsborough Street.
